Meet Sophie

Hello, I’m Sophie. I’m glad you found your way to my website, and I hope to tell you a little about myself here. I know it can be difficult to find the right therapist, and hopefully this can help you decide whether I’m the right therapist for you.

I prioritise building a warm and trusting relationship

I’ve been working as a psychotherapist and counsellor for over 8 years and truly love my work. I am fascinated by human beings, and I never want to stop learning about them. I feel privileged to be able to hear people’s stories and join them in their journeys towards growth and healing. I believe in everyone’s potential to feel more at peace in their lives.

First, I prioritise building a warm and trusting relationship with my clients. I hope to build a relationship with you where you feel you can speak freely, without judgment, and be met with care and understanding. I always try to see things from my client’s perspective, and also point out things I think they might be missing. I’m active in sessions and share my thoughts and perspectives, if I think they might be helpful. I always do this in a curious and collaborative way.

I like to work holistically, which means I consider not just your mental health or emotional challenges, but also your history, your life experiences, your relationships, your physical health, the communities you’re a part of and what your day to day life looks like.

I believe that all of this feeds into each other to create good mental health, and longer term change comes from understanding all of these layers. For example, this may mean working through difficult emotions about the past, increasing connection to community and culture, or improving your relationship to your body. I like to dig deep, and I invite my clients to do the same - though always at their pace.

In our sessions, we’ll work together at your pace to build this picture of you and what brought you to therapy, which will allow us to find the paths forward. Getting this in-depth picture of you will help us to find what you need - what is missing - for you to feel calmer, safer, more in tune with yourself, and better able to respond to life’s challenges.

I use a range of therapeutic modalities that focus on attachment, emotions, and somatic psychology. I mostly draw from Schema Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Outside of therapy

Outside of work, I like to spend time with friends and family, read books, go see music and art, and experiment with cooking. I’ve lived in Melbourne for 15 years and it is very much my home, and I am also lucky to have connections to many other cultures. I am grateful to now be working and living on the land of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Taungurung people, and recognise their enduring traditions of tending to land and spirit.
